Project 05: Excursions - Frith Street Gallery

Fiona Banner - The Naked Ear

This was another exhibit that I really enjoyed, showcasing works from Fiona Banner. I have researched her work before but it was really interesting to see her work up close.

My favourite piece was '1066', 2010. Indian ink on wall, 2150 x 400 cm.

This was a wall drawing describing the battle of England's last invasion.

Below are a few photos I took while at the exhibit.

Project 05: Excursions - Serpentine Gallery

Serpentine Gallery

At the Serpentine, we watched a few films from the artist Philippe Parreno.

I found these films quite random as I didn't truly understand the content. Im not particularly interested in artist films, so this may be the reason for lack of interest. I also found it rather difficult to relate the films to 'beyond the boundaries'.

Below are stills from the films, sourced from the Serpentine Gallery.

Project 05: Excursions - Shadow Catchers

Shadow Catchers - Camera-less Photography

Below are images from the artists that were in the exhibition.

The artists include:
  • Floris Neususs
  • Pierre Cordier
  • Garry Fabian Miller
  • Susan Derges
  • Adam Fuss
I thoroughly enjoyed this exhibit, it was very interesting and inspirational. I could have easily have spent hours in this exhibit, it is defiantly a must see!

Project 05: Excursions - Woolwich

Another part of the excursion was to document Woolwich.

We had been travelling all day by now and we ended up arriving at Woolwich quite late, so we didn't have much time to document.

Quite a few of the people I was traveling with had never been to Woolwich before, and they weren't very keen to stay there very long, as it looked like quite a 'rough' area to them. However I have previously been here before so I knew what to expect but to me Woolwich was just like any other town i've been to.

However these are a few of the photos I took if Woolwich.

Project 05: Excursions - Tate Boat

As part of the list of excursions we had to visit, going on the 'Tate Boat' was one of them. We had to record the journey of the boat trip.

I have never been on the Tate Boat, so as I was documenting the journey, I seemed to be fascinated by all the different bridges we were travelling through, so I focused on taking pictures of these.

Below are just a few of the bridges I photographed.

Project 05: Excursions - Mike Nelson

Mike Nelson - The Coral Reef

Mike Nelson's 'The Coral Reef' was first shown in Matt's Gallery, East London in 2000. It was recently acquired for Tate's collection. The work's title alludes to a collection of complex fragile belief systems that form a layer - a coral reef - beneath the 'ocean surface' of dominant ideologies.

In Nelson's words, he wants viewers to feel 'lost in a world of lost people'.

Project 05: Brief

3 Week Exploration Investigation

Beyond the boundaries is a suggestive term that refers to something that can't be defined because we have not yet experienced it. It suggests a place outside of our sphere to which we would not normally go. Although a spatical description it can relate to other areas of our lives.
