Mike Nelson's 'The Coral Reef' was first shown in Matt's Gallery, East London in 2000. It was recently acquired for Tate's collection. The work's title alludes to a collection of complex fragile belief systems that form a layer - a coral reef - beneath the 'ocean surface' of dominant ideologies.
In Nelson's words, he wants viewers to feel 'lost in a world of lost people'.
