Project 4: D.I.Y - Brief

Brief

The brief for this project is to 'Do It Yourself', which means that we can create own project.

For mine i wanted to explore all the different rules on layout of posters from the 1950's onwards. To see how many different rules and techniques they used.

From this i will research posters from some iconic people from this era, and dissect the posters to see if there are any guidelines i can establish.

From this research i hope to make experiments from my findings and hopefully establish or adopt techniques into my own practise.

Year 2: Cinematagraphic - Film

These are some of the stills from our final film.

Year 2: Cinematagraphic - Documentary

Once we had created a storyboard, we were able to start filming, below are screen shots from the documentary we created, showing the film process.

Year 2: Cinematagraphic - Final Idea

After a lots of testing of the initial ideas, we decided that we would use the children's perspective idea, as it gave us a lot more to work with and we weren't as restricted of what we could do with this idea.

Location Ideas

  • Playground
  • Tourist Attraction - Buckingham Palace
  • House
  • Zoo/Aquarium
  • Toy Store
Again we tested the following ideas, but a lot of them didn't look right or work with the child's perspective, as some of the places were not very interesting from this perspective. However the playground had more potential as it was such a large space, we would have a lot more room to film and fewer restrictions to scenery.

We therefore decided to shoot the film in a playground, we found a perfect little playground near Waterloo, which had the Millennium Eye in the background (which would be a good feature in the film).

Year 2: Cinematagraphic - Initial Ideas

  • Tourist attractions - directions, from a child's perspective, different languages, maybe voice over directions.
  • Children's Perspective - Different heights (inspired by Alex Rubins film 'Routes').
  • Construction Site - Interesting sounds and perspective, can follow each builders narrative.
  • John Smith's 'Girl chewing gum' - Could use a similar theme of using a voice over that narrates and gives directions to people that have been filmed in everyday life.

Year 2: Cinematagraphic - Brief

Design and make a video on the theme of design and travel in space.

Create a video between 1 and 3 minutes long without cuts; with original soundtrack created with the video; in groups of six to eight people.

Elective: Image & Text - Final Piece

These are photos of my final piece for my elective i have been studying this term of image and text.

This piece represents what I learnt in our first lesson, where we were given a piece of text, with the key word that described the creature
, replaced by the letter 'X'. From this text we needed to create a image that represented what we though 'X' was.

To illustrate the piece I created a small book, using the original text we were given and created a pop-up illustration of the creature that was described.

Project 05: Ideas - Psychedelic Drugs

After visiting the 'High Society' exhibit, which was based around psychedelic drugs. I decided to research into the main types of these drugs that have a psychedelic effect on people.

The main types I found were:

Hallucinogens
  • Salvia Divinorum
  • Psilocybin Mushrooms
  • LSD
  • Mescaline
Depressants
  • Opiates
  • Tranquillisers
  • Alcohol
  • Heroin
  • Cannabis
Stimulants
  • Nicotine
  • Amphetamines
  • Caffeine
  • Cocaine
From this I researched into the effects, the appearances and the slang words for them. This then lead me to research the chemical symbols of these drugs, as it is a visual representation of them and I thought I could present these in a graphical way.

Below are the diagrams for 11 of the drugs listed above.

Project 06: Artist Research - Visionaire Magazine

Visionaire

These are screen shots of the 55th issue of Visionaire. This issue included pop-ups from a number of artists.

Project 06: Artist Research - Su Blackwell

Su Blackwell

Su Blackwell's work is based on book sculpture, she creates beautiful and detailed sculptures, below I have included a few samples of her work:

project 06: Artist Research - Sam Winston

Sam Winston

Winston is another artist that uses sculpture in his work, below is work from 'Folded Dictionary', which is the full twenty volume Oxford Dictionary folded in on itself and 'Dictionary Story Book'.

Project 06: Artist Research - Peter Callesen

Peter Callesen

I researched Callesen for this project as his work is based on paper structure. I though that these paper structures could easily be incorporated into a book structure.

Project 06: Artist Research - Jonathan Callan

Jonathan Callan

I chose to look at some of Callan's work as he creates sculptures using books, below are just a sample of his work:
