Year 1: Term 2: Project 6: Nature of Things

Project: Nature of Things

Brief: Explore the area of Dungness. Look at the things you find; think of their origins, real or imaginary, history, memory, meaning, trajectory.

Make drawings, maps, photographs, recordings, diagrams and notes on site.

Take this information back to the studio and create narratives, for instance; type, film/sequence, drawing, text, sound or performance.

Here are a few photos i took of Dungness, i found it a very strange place to be in.

The only idea i could come up with after visiting Dungness, was that i saw faces in some of the pieces of machinery, wood and rubbish and thought of turning these into characters to create a story.

Year 1: Term 2: Project 5: BFI

After showing these to my tutor we discussed that the typography needed to be experimented with, i was also advised to research film strips and to try and place the images within the cells.

I thought that this was looking more effective, however i decided to find thumbnails of all the films that would be shown in the LFF and place them on a poster, so that it was more relevant to the subject of films.

I also changed the composition to being portrait as most posters are laid out this way, and with advice from my tutor i created a blank space for the text to be placed in so that it would stand out.

Year 1: Term 2: Project 5: BFI

Project: BFI

Brief: You are asked to pitch for the design of the visual identity for the London Film Festival 2010.

This is a live brief.

Research:

The first type of research i created was looking at all the BFI posters i could find.

From these i created a intial idea of creating a montage and adding different effects to form of poster:

year 1: Term 2: Project 4: Design a Dictionary

After having another tutorial i was advised to complete all 40 posters and improve them by hiving each language in black but having a different font relating to the type of language. For instance an old font for Shakespeare's language, a modern font and a text like font.

Once these would be completed i was advised to take pictures of each poster and make it into a book.

Year 1: Term 2: Project 4: Design a Dictionary

After having a discussion with my tutor, he told me to present all three different definitions on a poster, and have them in them in a tab format.

This was my experiment:

The first experiment i tried was to create a triangle shape pyramid with the text so that the block of text was 3D, however unfortunately it didn't look as good as i thought it would be. I then tried just adding a tab onto the back of the text and making a slit in the paper so it could be placed in it. However the pieces of paper kept falling out, therefore i decided to add the tab on the back of the text but just stuck it directly to the paper. This worked a lot better.

After the experiment i decided to keep to the idea of sticking the tabs directly onto the paper, these are examples of two of the finished pieces:

Year 1: Term 2: Project 4: Design a Dictionary

Today I was able to complete all 40 words and phrases in 'texting' language. However there may be a few words that i may need to change because it is quite hard to understand what the letters are meant to represent. I will show my tutor tomorrow to get his opinion on what he thinks of the concept.

Year 1: Term 2: Project 4: Design a Dictionary

Today I continued and finished creating all the compositions for the 40 words and sentences.

I therefore began research on how to translate the lines from shakespeare into modern language. From the website: http://nfs.sparknotes.com/romeojuliet/page_2.html (27.04.10)

Once i had completed this i went on to translating the modern language into 'texting language'. From the website: http://www.lingo2word.com/translate.php (27.04.10)

I was able to re-compose the 40 words and lines into modern english but i have not been able to get round to the 'texting' language. However this will be my task for tomorrow.
